Rare and beautifully toned
Lot 145
THRACO-MACEDONIAN REGION. Uncertain. Circa 520-500 BC. Tetrobol (Silver, 12 mm, 2.38 g). Bunch of grapes. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Boston MFA 1295 ('Tenos'). Pozzi 2057-60 ('Tenos'). SNG Copenhagen 766-7 ('Tenos'). Tzamalis -. Rare. Beautifully toned and struck on sound metal. Good very fine.

Privately acquired from Brian Kritt on 6 January 2011.

While this issue was traditionally assigned to Tenos, Sheedy argued against such an attribution, suggesting a mint in the northern Aegean instead. Judging from its wonderful cabinet toning, the coin probably comes from an old collection, but its pedigree has yet to be discovered.
